A former OceanGate adviser said the Titan submarine briefly unloaded its cargo before exploding on June 18.

Rob McCallum also told The New Yorker that the Titan tried to climb up before losing contact with its aircraft carrier. McCallum is at least the second person to say OceanGate tried to cancel the dive before disaster struck.
Titan's attempt to reach the surface before disappearing
OceanGate dropped its ballast and tried to climb for a while before it went missing.
Five people on board may have aborted the dive but the ship exploded first.
McCallum, who was also a consultant for previous expeditions, said he received preliminary reports of Titan's final dive.

"The report I got immediately after the event, long before they exploded, was that the submarine was approaching 3,500 meters," he said. McCallum said the submarine dropped weights, meaning the dive was aborted, and then lost communication with its aircraft carrier.
McCallum is the co-founder of the adventure expedition company EYOS Expeditions. He previously led dives to the wreck of the Titanic and other deep-sea sites.
But he uses submarines designed to reach depths of just 19,000 feet, not like OceanGate's submarines.
His ship has been approved to reach extreme depths by the DNV marine classification society.
He is also in regular contact with OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and frequents OceanGate workshops.
McCallum is at least the second person to publicly state that the Titanic tried to reach the surface before it exploded.
