According to the meaning, Borobudur comes from the word, Bara which is interpreted as a monastery complex, and Budur, which means above. So Borobudur Temple means a temple located on a hill. Borobudur Temple is in the form of a stupa, founded around 800 AD in the era of Syailendra's reign.

In addition, Borobudur is a temple that has a collection with the most complete and largest Buddhist reliefs in the world, consisting of six square-shaped terraces on top of which there are three circular courts, and on the walls of the temple decorated with 2,672 reliefs and there are 504 Buddha statues.

From several references, Borobudur is a masterpiece of Indonesian Buddhist art and is an example of achieving harmony in architectural techniques and aesthetics of Buddhist art in Java.

The Borobudur Temple building is inspired by dharma ideas from India, including stupas and mandalas, and is believed to be a continuation of local elements. The stepped punden megalithic structure or also called the terraced pyramid found in Indonesia's prehistoric period is a blend of native Indonesian ancestor worship and the struggle to achieve nirvana in Buddhism.

The stupa at Borobudur Temple is interpreted as the highest symbol of Buddhism which is also a replica of the universe. Which has a symbol of the microcosmos, which is divided into three levels. At the first level, the human world is affected by negative impulses. In the second stage, man has been able to control his negative impulses and use his positive impulses. Finally, at the highest level, the human world is no longer limited by physical things and desires.

As a place of religious pilgrimage for Buddhists, these Buddhists always gather at Borobudur Temple every year to commemorate the Trisuci Vesak, both from Indonesia and from abroad.
