Climbing activities of Mount Gede Pangrango, which is located between Cianjur Regency and Sukabumi Regency, West Java Province, are deliberately closed temporarily.

The Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Center announced that this temporary closure will take place on August 13-18, 2023.

Head of BBTN Gunung Gede Pangrango, Sapto Aji Prabowo said, the reason for the closure of climbing was due to cold weather conditions on the mountain.

"Climbing activities in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park are temporarily closed to the public from August 13 to 18, 2023 due to bad weather (cold)," Sapto said through a circular received in Jakarta, Saturday (5/8/2023).

Cold air in Mount Gede Pangrango

Over the past few days, ice has blanketed the summit of Mount Gede Pangrango. This phenomenon is due to a drastic decrease in air temperature during the dry season, thus freezing dew and water, as reported by Antara (5/8/2023).

TNGGP also reported that the air temperature at the top of Mount Gede Pangrango had decreased to freezing. This drastic drop in air temperature can cause climbers to be prone to hypothermia.

"This announcement is to be a concern for prospective climbers of Mount Gede Pangrango National Park," added Sapto.

"To keep hypothermia from getting sick, climbers are also asked to use thick jackets and bring enough food supplies while at the top of the mountain," said Sapto.
