Surakarta City, Indonesia was included as a "UNESCO Creative City 2023" on Tuesday (31/10/2023), with the category of Crafts and Folk Arts.

"New cities are recognized for their strong commitment to harnessing culture and creativity as part of development strategies. Also, showing innovative practices in human-centered urban planning," said a statement from UNESCO's official website, quoted Thursday (2/11/2023).

55 New Cities Joined as UNESCO Creative Cities

UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, determined that there are about 55 cities that have recently joined as Creative Cities.

The addition of this new city extends UNESCO's coverage to 350 cities in more than 100 countries in the world representing seven creative fields, including the fields of Craft and Folk Arts, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music.

These newly designated cities will work with other members of the Creative Cities Network to strengthen resilience in the face of evolving threats.

These include climate change, rising inequality, and rapid urbanization, with 68 percent of the world's population projected to live in urban areas by 2050.

"Cities in the Creative Cities Network will take the lead in improving access to culture, as well as rallying the power of creativity for urban resilience and development."

55 cities that have just joined the UNESCO Creative Cities will be invited to participate in the upcoming UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) 2024 Annual Conference, from Monday (1/7/2024) to Friday (5/7/2024).

 This activity will be held in Braga, Portugal, with the theme "Bringing Youth to the Table for the next decade".
